 2017 Preview 


       Montgomery Academy completed the 2016 season with a 7-4 record. With their 5-1 region record and a second place finish in Class 3A region three, the Eagles earned a spot in the playoffs in 2016. Montgomery Academy's season came to an end in the first round of the playoffs when they fell to Oakman by a score of 21-0.

       Since 2010, Montgomery Academy has gone a combined 46-32. Their 59.0% winning percentage ranks 20th in Class 3A over the past seven seasons.

       Over the past 25 seasons, Montgomery Academy has managed to compile a record of 177-119. Their 60.0% winning percentage ranks 13th in Class 3A and 91st in the AHSAA.

       The Eagles are led by head coach Gary Nelson who is entering his second season at the helm. His team finished with a 7-4 record in his first season at Montgomery Academy. Under his direction the Eagles have qualified for the playoffs once. They have not won a region crown with Coach Nelson.

       Coach Nelson's overall record as a head football coach in one season stands at 7-4 (63.6%).

       The Montgomery Academy Eagles will play in Class 3A region three during the 2017 season.

       The Eagles should be in contention for a playoff spot in region three this season. They will be looking to gain an advantage by hosting a first round postseason game.

      Senior Keefe White returns after rushing for 1,714 yards on 210 carries and scoring 19 touchdowns.

      Senior Kevin Doh also returns after rushing for 429 yards on 62 carries and scoring 7 touchdowns.

      Also returning is Trey Lindsey at quarterback. He completed 34 of 86 passes for 597 yards and nine touchdowns.

       The Eagles open the 2017 season at home against non-region opponent Elmore County on Friday, August 25 at McLemore Field. Last year the Elmore County Panthers finished with an overall record of 4-6 and in sixth place in Class 4A region three.

       Montgomery Academy and Elmore County have met a total of 4 times on the football field. The Eagles have a 3-1-0 record against the Panthers. They last met in 2016 with Elmore County winning by a score of 35-28.

       Montgomery Academy returns 3A All-State Senior running back Keefe White. He was named to the honorable mention team last season.

Bart Starr received coaching from Kentucky great Babe Parilli his senior season at Sidney Lanier in hopes of joining Bear Bryant at Kentucky. He had to settle for Alabama.
